Job Description

DBA / Cloud SRE – MySQL – London / hybrid – DevOps approach

I’m working with a global leading social gaming and casinos company in London to recruit a DBA with DevOps / SRE infrastructure automation skills to join their international software team. Ideally you will have experience in MySQL (they also use PostgreSQL and MongoDB) and experience automating infrastructure as a Cloud Engineer or DevOps Engineer. Their Cloud Platform is GCP but they are happy to offer cross training from AWS or Azure. It’s a tall order I know!

As a member of the Platform Reliability Team, you will spend most of your time improving database performance, scalability and reliability as well as delivering database services and best practices for their global platform to manage millions of customers around the world in a large-scale production environment. However the DBAs are often blocked by the Infrastructure team because they don't have Cloud Infrastructure / DevOps skills. ie. deploying VMs, Proxy's and applications in an automated way so skills in this area would be highly desirable.

The DBA role is global and they have MySQL databases covering customers in USA, Europe and Asia Pacific. They are modernising their Database stack from MySQL v5 to v8 and where possible replacing MySQL with MongoDB and PostgreSQL. To begin with your DBA role will be focussed on getting up to speed with their MySQL Database Infrastructure and applications and then will look for opportunities to utilise your DevOps skills to automate processes.

This will be a varied role and challenging role as they are in the process of move from their infrastructure from a monolithic architecture to a cloud native, microservices environment whilst keeping their platform live for their customers.

Responsibilities:

* Proactively identify database performance

* Review, optimize and refactor the existing database schema

* Drive database best practices

* Plan for long term scalability and architecture planning

* Improve tooling to detect performance bottlenecks and security issues, early in the development cycle

* Participate in the incident management processes to ensure SLOs are met

Key skills and experience

* Significant experience in using MySQL for mission-critical applications (percona, MariaDB in the future)

* Expert understanding of high-performance MySQL (>50k QPS)

* In-depth knowledge of MySQL backup/recovery and replication

* Working knowledge of PostgreSQL, Redis, MongoDB

* DevOps / Infrastructure automation skills with GCP (Azure or AWS also considered), Ansible, Terraform, Helm

* SQL and query optimising techniques with a demonstrable ability to both diagnose and prevent performance problems

* Assist the development teams with database design and schema modifications

Desirable skills: MySQL clustering desirable eg. Galera Cluster and Percona monitoring tools such as PMM

They do not offer visa sponsorship.

Salary: £70,000 – £80,000 + bonus + benefits

Location: London – Hybrid working
